What is the Simple Present Tense? Or What is the Present Indefinite Tense?
Tense is the way to understand the time, so we can find out when actual work has been done.
You can define Present Indefinite Tense or Simple Present Tense as any action that happens in the present, although there is no time limit for the completion of that action.
We can use the present indefinite tense to express true events, the near future, habits, nature, routine or daily events, facts, etc.
Some Examples of Present Indefinite Tense
- Reena eats an apple every day.
- Raju loves sugarcane juice.
- I go to school every morning.
- You read the newspaper daily.
- I wake up at 4 o’clock every day.
- Sunil goes to the office at 9:00.
- I like milk.
- He likes chocolates.
- It always snows here in January.
- Nidhi plays chess in the evenings.
Uses of Present Indefinite Tense
We use the simple present tense (हम सरल वर्तमान काल का उपयोग करते हैं):
- To express actions done as a matter of habit.
(आदत के रूप में किये गये कार्यों को व्यक्त करने के लिए।)
For example,
Rajesh wakes up at 6 a.m.
राजेश सुबह 6 बजे उठता है.
- To express actions done repeatedly.
(बार-बार की जाने वाली क्रियाओं को व्यक्त करने के लिए।)
For example,
They play football in the park every day.
वे हर दिन पार्क में फुटबॉल खेलते हैं।
- To state facts or what is known to be true.
(तथ्यों या जो सच माना जाता है उसे बताने के लिए।)
For example,
A snake has no eyelids.
साँप की पलकें नहीं होतीं।
- We use simple present tense to describe scheduled events in the future
For Example:
The train arrives at 5 o’clock.
Note: These activities do not have to be happening right now.
This type of sentence, especially if it’s describing a habit, will usually include a time expression like “always,” “every year,” “never,” “often,” “on Mondays,” “rarely,” “sometimes,” or “usually.”
Present Indefinite Tense Rules
Rules for Affirmative Sentences in Present Indefinite Tense
In the present simple 3rd person singular (he, she, it, or single name), add s, es, or ies to the base form of the verb.
Structure of present simple 3rd person singular:
Subject + v5 + object + other words
Rule 1: If a verb ends with a vowel before -y, we add -s for the third-person singular
Example:
- say > says
- play > plays
- buy > buys
- pay > pays
Rule 2: If a verb ends with a consonant before -y, change the y to i and add es for the third person singular
Example:
- study > studies
- fly > flies
- cry > cries
- try > tries
- fry > fries
Rule 3: If a verb ends with s, ss, sh, ch, x, zz, and o, add an es.
Example:
- wash > washes
- mix > mixes
- relax > relaxes
- go > goes
- pass > passes
- express > expresses
- cross > crosses
- buzz > buzzes

The verb base form does not change in the present simple third-person Plural (They).

Rules for Negative Sentences in Present Indefinite Tense
Negative sentences are formed by putting does not or doesn’t with the singular subject and do not or don’t with a plural subject before the first stage of the verb.
- We use does not for singular subjects.
- We use do not for the plural subject.
- We use do not for subject I.
Structure of present simple negative sentence with singular subject:
Subject + does not + v1 + object + other words.
Example:
- She does not go home.
- He does not cook food.
- It does not break.
- Raju doesn’t buy milk.
- Razia does not sing a new song.

Rules for Interrogative Sentences in Present Indefinite Tense

Rules for Interrogative Negative Sentences in Present Indefinite Tense
Structure for Yes/No type of Negative sentences:
Do/Does + subject + not + v1 + object + other words +?
Examples:

- Does she not talk to you?
- Do we not go to the shopping mall?
- Does the kid not cry?
- Do Radha and Krishna not live in Padrauna?

WH-word Negative type of question
Structure for Wh-word type of Negative sentences:

Note: We do not use Do/Does when the interrogative word itself is, in such case, we add s/es at the end of the verb with a subject.
