Sergey Brin Urges Google Employees to Intensify Efforts Towards Achieving AGI
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has heightened the urgency in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI), urging employees working on the company’s Gemini AI initiative to adopt 60-hour workweeks and maintain daily office attendance. According to an internal memo cited by The New York Times, Brin emphasized the importance of intensified efforts for Google to lead the competition in achieving AGI, where machines surpass human intelligence.
Brin reportedly encouraged staff to commit to being present in the office Monday through Friday, describing 60 hours per week as the “sweet spot of productivity.” He elaborated that this balance allows for optimal focus and efficiency without risking the exhaustion that comes from overwork, aligning with research indicating that productivity tends to decline after a certain number of work hours. Brin also cautioned against the risk of burnout in exceeding these hours. Additionally, he warned about the negative impact of employees engaging in minimal work efforts, explaining that it creates resentment among peers who may feel compelled to pick up the slack and ultimately undermines overall team productivity and morale.
